KNK Studio error: "CADLink MFC Application has stopped working"

As the title states, I am constantly plagued with the CADLink MFC Application has stopped working error.

It seems pretty loud and clear that there's no good fix at this time. Chad says Cadlink is working on a fix. Cadlink says Accugraphics provides their own support for the software. I'm not thrilled with either answer.

So... I'll try to find a new way to work around this.

Are there ANY other programs that will communicate with the KNK Maxx 24? Where does the KNK's driver come from? It seems like it is common practice in this industry to build a machine around someone else's drivers...

Am I stuck with the .knk file format?

I am growing increasingly tired of having a rather expensive cutter that fails to perform as advertised.

Hello Mark,

CADlink has been working on this with Microsoft. Today, I received an email from CADlink with a possible solution to the Error mentioned above:

From your desktop, right click on the shortcut for KNKStudio > Properties > Compatibility. check mark "Disable desktop composition"

As for the KNK driver - it was created by us with CADlink. It is an HPGL driver, but we have specific code built in for specific options, which are unique to the KNK machines. You may have some success using a generic HPGL driver in another software package, but we can not guarantee that.

Accugraphics is responsible for providing all support. CADlink will simply refer any support back to us.

The problem your experiencing, not limited to just you, is not a problem everyone is experiencing. This makes it harder to troubleshoot. We have thousands of customers out there and only a small percentage of them seem to experience this issue. With that being said, we will continue to work on any issues brought to our attention.

Just out of curiosity, does the crashing occur completely at random or have you noticed that it occurs when using certain functions in the software?

Sandy - I have had software crashes during, but not limited to, the following:

-sending a file to the cutter
-welding
-using the duplicate function
-editing nodes (adding, deleting, moving)
-importing EPS or AI files

Some files seem to fail more than others - and if they fail during the send to cutter process, they seem to fail at precisely the same point each time. Changing the cut order will sometimes help, but not always.

Editing files in Corel Draw sometimes helps, but not always.

I'd have to say there's no rhyme or reason to the failures at this time. It happens when it wants to happen. More often than not, its while sending a file to the cutter, which leads to wasted vinyl and time. COSTLY!

I'll spend some time tonight trying to break it with desktop composition turned off...

Yes, please let us know what happens when you make that change. Your experience is a new one for me. The only time I've had crashing is when I'm making a LOT of node editing changes without clicking on Apply. But certainly just the normal node editing doesn't cause it to crash.

I am pretty thrilled right now... I just cut a file that has failed literally EVERY time I have tried. To push my luck a bit, I duplicated it a bunch of times, and messed with as many other features as possible (to include every tool that has caused program errors in the past).

It CUT! No errors, success the first time.

And I spoke a moment too soon. I just killed the program using the Ginsu Knife tool... I made four cuts, hit apply, and lost everything. "CADLink MFC Application has stopped working" again.

Failure #2. Opened an image in KNK Studio that has previously cut just fine... Duplicated the image twice, arranged and distributed. Sent to cutter, MCF failure after about 10 seconds.

Hi,

I had a full day of cutting yesterday, all running fine until late in the afternoon, sent a simple heart image - no layers - no colours - nothing fancy at all - just an outline of a heart - selected it - clicked on the cut toolbox - and the software just hung and I got a not responding message - restarted, rebooted, restarted knk - opened the same file - got the same problem, opened other simple files - same problem - left it overnight - rebooted, restarted (4 times) - I can't cut a single thing - the software just stops working when I hit the cut toolbox.

Previously to that - I'd get a port already in use message - if i unplugged the usb cord from the computer and repugged it and hit cut again, I'd then get a baud message error - and then if I clicked retry - it would then cut ok, I have had to do this EVERY time I want to cut something - very RARELY does it just cut - I always get an error message but have managed to just ignore them and cut anyway - Now I can't use my cutter AT ALL.

I tired your suggestion above "diabable desktop composition" still no luck.

Any other suggestions? I have a deadline that looming.!

This has always been an issue with the Ginsu knife. Try hitting Apply after each cut across an image.

Regarding the crashing during cutting, I don't know what else you've been told to try. But, if you've not already done this, could you try your same file again after a fresh reboot of Windows and have no other unnecessary programs running?

Regarding the Port Already In Use message, try having the cutter Offline. Then send your image to cut, then press the Online button. That should correct it.

However, that doesn't matter if your software is crashing. Try the suggestion Chad made above where you change a setting in how the software is launched. I will also mention this to Accugraphic when they reopen Monday morning.

This is Mark's wife... I know the crash while cutting the last time was a file that had previously cut just fine one at a time. And it still cuts just fine one at a time. He was trying to cut two of that image and it crashed.

I think this might be dependent on your version of Windows 7, but if you go into the same window by right clicking on the shortcut, see if you can "run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

I will talk to CADlink on Monday and find out if there are any other suggestions they may have. I know they have been working directly with Windows on these application failures.

I had tried running in XP SP3 compatibility mode previously... It seemed to make little difference, so I shut it off.

Turned it back on a few minutes ago... I actually just had KNK Studio fail while using the scroll wheel on my mouse to zoom in and out on an image.

As of tonight, I am using Flexi Starter 8.6 V2 with our KNK Maxx. So far, flawless cutting. I have it set up as an Eagle cutter in the production manager (a cutter which looks curiously similar to the KNK Maxx).

Just FYI... Of course, long term testing may be required to determine what features do and do not work. But as of this moment, the Flexi software suite appears to do everything I need it to do.

NO SOFTWARE CRASHES YET!

The Eagle looks similar to the MAXX because it's the commercial version of our machines. Glad Flexi is working for you.

Chad - Any word from Cadlink on this problem? I continue to fight this... Flexi works with some files, but not all. I need a solution. I want the software that came with my KNK Maxx to actually work. I'm not the only one out there having this issue...

Mark, Accugraphic is closed for their annual summer vacation and will reopen Monday, July 12. Your best bet is to email Chad directly and then cc me on the email so that I can follow up and make sure you get a response... especially since they will be inundated with email when they reopen on the 12th.
